Spencer Moore Discusses the Award-Winning Hairy Chin Podcast and the Need for Better Women's Health Advocacy

"Winning four of them was just incredible," Moore said. "It was reassuring to me that this work is doing something. It's helping."
Moore created The Hairy Chin Podcast after living with chronic illness and receiving an early-stage breast cancer diagnosis at age 40. She named the platform after a physical experience many women recognize but may feel pressured to hide: unwanted chin hair.
For Moore, the name represents more than humor. It opens the door to conversations about hormonal changes, shame, body image, and symptoms women may avoid discussing with their healthcare providers.
"Once you start talking about things, you chip away at those feelings of being uncomfortable," Moore said. "Sometimes these things we hide are actually quite relevant to our healthcare."
During the interview, Moore offers a practical starting point for women attempting to advocate for themselves: understand what is normal for their own bodies and clearly communicate when something changes.
"One of the most important things you can say to a doctor is, 'This is not normal for me,'" Moore said.
Barker also shares her own experience living with medullary sponge kidney and the difficulty of speaking openly about a chronic health condition while building a business.
"Women are constantly told to advocate for themselves, but very few are taught what to say when they are sitting in an examination room feeling vulnerable or dismissed," Barker said. "Spencer is helping turn that vague instruction into a skill women can actually use."
Moore also discusses the responsibility involved in producing health-related content. She carefully researches topics, vets potential guests, and distinguishes between health advocates who educate and influencers who make questionable claims or sell products that may not be appropriate for every individual.
